West Ireland Shopping

Shop 'til you drop in Ireland's West!

You'll notice the difference the moment you walk down the main street of any town in Ireland's West. Lots of individual shops, the owners name over the door, friendly, welcoming, just made for browsing. Shopping truly becomes a pleasure here. It's part of the experience.

Of course you'll find the high street chain stores and shopping centres too, especially in the bigger towns and Galway City. It's the others though, that make it different, that make Ireland's West stand out, the artisan shops and quirky boutiques. Popular with visitors is Treasure Chest right in the heart of the city which stocks the finest of Irish products, china, crystal and ladies fashions. Nearby Fallers' Jewellers has a wide range of Claddagh jewellery, handcrafted on the premises.

In Mayo, Westport is famous for craft shops and specialty stores. Castlebar and Ballina have a great selection of well known shops and supermarkets. Roscommon shoppers have a great choice too. Visitors love the craft selection at Úna Bhan in Boyle and browsing through clocks and antiques in Time Pieces in Roscommon Town.

Traditional knitwear (and not so traditional high fashion knitwear too), pottery, decorative items, handmade bellows, trendy fleecewear, musical instruments, jewellery and basketry to name but a few. The range and quality is staggering. Keep an eye out for enticing signs, especially in more rural areas - some of the shops cum workshops are an attraction in themselves. Take Malachy Kearns the bodhrán maker whose workshop is near Roundstone in Connemara (Roundstone Music). Seeing a skilled master craftsman like that at work is a privilege and taking home one of his handmade bodhráns (a traditional Irish goatskin drum) is like bringing part of Ireland's West into your own home.
